About the guide
From Krossbu you have access to many different sides of Jotunheimen. You can take a peak one day and crawl in caves the next. You can choose to walk along the marked footpaths and meet other hikers, or lay your walk in over the desolate plains. You can come in from the cold of the glacier and warm your bones beside the fire withing a hundred year old log walls. Everything is within easy reach.

This guide presents all the walks you can take with Krossbu as your basecamp. Each walk is described in words and pictures. In addition, the guide contains a number of articles on everything from meteorology to arts, from physiology to philosophy. In the menu to the left you can see all the walks that are described and by moving the pointer over the walks, you can see which article is connected to the walk.

It should be said already here that Krossbuguiden is a work in progress. Not all articles are completed yet. There is also some work to be done with reconnaissance, photographing and collecting GPS coordinates. The aim is to finish this last collection work during 2005. The finishing touches to the image material will however go on and it is possible that new pages will be added, so please come back and look for updates.

Using the guide
Each page is accessible from the menu (1) to the left. The first paragraphs in the text is an introduction (2) which in most cases connects the article to the walk. Then there is the article text (3) which takes on a specific subject with connection to the mountains in general or Jotunheimen and Krossbu specifically. Finally there is the walk description (4) which explains where the walk goes. Even if there is often a connection between the walk and the article, the idea is that you can read all the articles even if you only intend to take a few of the walks.

GPS coordinates
Interspersed in the walk descriptions are small squares with coordinates, intended for those who have their GPS receivers with them on the mountain. GPS is however in no way necessary to take the walks. These coordinates are just a bonus for those interested in that kind of thing, and shows the position of waypoints and sights along the way. Those who use Garmin MapSource can download all waypoints and routes here. For other makes, all the coordinates for a walk is found at the bottom of each page, so you can cut and paste them to your own program.

The history of the guide
Krossbuguiden in its first incarnation came out in 1989 and was a small book of 80 pages, aimed at those students at the Olympiaskolan high school in Helsingborg who each autumn goes to Krossbu. It contained descriptions of everything the students should learn during their week in the mountains and practical advise and rules for the different walks. This first Krossbuguide has been printed in many new editions year by year with some updates of the contents. In 1997, the first Krossbuguide on the internet was published. It was a first attempt at describing all the possibilities of the area to a broader audiance. The current version of Krossbuguiden started forming in 2003 and after a good deal of reconnaissance, photography and gathering of coordinates it was released on the web in 2005.

The author
The man behind Krossbuguiden in all its three incarnations is Dan Ullén, a student at Olympiaskolan in the beginning of the 80's. Since my first school outing in 1983 I have visited Krossbu almost every year and have by and by come to know the area as well as the proverbial pocket. Any factual errors in the articles are the author's own and comments will gladly be received at dan@dod.no. Krossbuguiden is a private project, completely independent from Krossbu Turiststasjon and Olympiaskolan. Many thanks though go to the school's teachers and students and to the hosts of Krossbu for inspiration, help and hospitality.
